As part of the ongoing expansion of the Deutsche Schule Durban, a new building is currently under construction to provide much-needed space for additional classrooms and learning areas. During this process, extensive groundwork was necessary to protect the new structure from damage caused by heavy rainfall and potential landslides. This included the installation of additional underground drainage systems.
To carry out this essential work, parts of the kindergarten playground had to be excavated and were significantly affected. Once construction is complete, the playground must be fully renovated to restore a safe, engaging, and age-appropriate space for our youngest learners. This renewal is crucial for the children’s development and well-being, and for maintaining the school’s high educational and care standards.
Our kindergarten and preschool area at the Deutsche Schule Durban is currently gaining a new heart: a fully renovated playground. After many years of intensive use and additional strain caused by construction work, a comprehensive renewal has become urgently necessary.
Thanks to the generous support of private donors and a trust, the construction work has already progressed significantly. The children follow the progress every day with great excitement – their anticipation for the new play area is immense.
However, a small remaining amount is still needed to complete the project.
Specifically, we aim to:
- install a large shade sail to provide urgently needed protection from the intense South African sun during outdoor play
- purchase new ride-on toys such as tricycles and small bicycles to support motor development
- add durable toys such as shovels as well as age-appropriate German-language books for the kindergarten
These elements are essential to transform the playground into a safe, child-friendly, and inspiring space while also supporting early German language development.
With your support, we can complete this project in the near future and hand over a fully equipped play area to our youngest learners – a place where they can move, explore, and play freely and safely.
