Internships.

Information for those interested in internships

We're delighted that you're interested in an internship at the Deutsche Schule Durban. To ensure a smooth application process, please take a moment to review our internship terms and conditions before applying.

Duration

You can choose between a short-term block internship of 4 to 6 weeks or a full practical semester, which lasts for 12 weeks and aligns with our school term.

Financial

To help you prepare for your time in Durban, it is important to know that our internships are voluntary and unpaid. You will need to budget accordingly for all your expenses, which include the cost of your flights, daily transport, and meals.

You will also be responsible for finding and funding your own accommodation, but we are here to help you get started. We will happily provide you with a list of recommended local housing options.

Residence Permit

To ensure a smooth and legal stay, please be aware that all interns must secure the appropriate residence permit for South Africa. It is your responsibility to manage this process. It is important to note that current regulations do not permit undertaking an internship on a standard tourist visa.

The German School Durban will provide you with a confirmation letter to support your application for the correct visa, which is typically a visitor’s visa with a special authorization for your internship. We urge you to consult the official website of the South African Department of Home Affairs or the nearest South African embassy for the most accurate, up-to-date information and application forms.

  • Support our teachers by assisting in the classroom and during lessons.

Other information

Here’s a helpful tip for your time in South Africa: the way we get around here is probably different from what you're used to. Our school is located in a beautiful suburb called Cowies Hill, but there is very little public transport like you would find in a German city. This means you won't be able to rely on buses or trains for your daily commute or for exploring.
