As part of the ongoing expansion of the Deutsche Schule Durban, a new building is currently under construction to provide much-needed space for additional classrooms and learning areas. During this process, extensive groundwork was necessary to protect the new structure from damage caused by heavy rainfall and potential landslides. This included the installation of additional underground drainage systems. To carry out this essential work, parts of the kindergarten playground had to be excavated and were significantly affected. Once construction is complete, the playground must be fully renovated to restore a safe, engaging, and age-appropriate space for our youngest learners. This renewal is crucial for the children’s development and well-being, and for maintaining the school’s high educational and care standards.
Bursaries - Supporting Access to Quality Education
The school’s Trust also raises funds to support children whose families are unable to fully cover school fees. Currently, 13 students benefit from this program and are able to attend the Deutsche Schule Durban, receiving a comprehensive, high-quality education. This support includes tuition, participation in excursions and school events, transport, and school uniforms—ensuring equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their financial background.
Grey water system for toilets / Rainwater Use for Toilet Flushing
The Deutsche Schule Durban, like many in KwaZulu-Natal, faces frequent and prolonged water outages due to a growing water crisis. To maintain hygiene and daily operations, we propose installing rainwater tanks and a piping system to use rainwater for toilet flushing. The project conserves drinking water, promotes sustainability and responsible resource use, and ensures sanitation during water shortages. We seek your support to bring this vital initiative to life.
Fundraising for School Expansion
In addition to our water-saving efforts, we are raising funds to purchase a neighbouring building to expand our school facilities. This space would serve multiple purposes: as a venue for school events, as accommodation for student teachers, and potentially as the site for a school-owned swimming pool. Student teachers from Germany support our school every quarter for a period of three months, contributing actively to classroom teaching and bringing fresh perspectives, cultural exchange, and valuable pedagogical input. Most of them come through established partnerships with German universities and teacher training programs. Providing on-site housing would make their stay more practical and cost-effective, while also generating rental income for the school. This project strengthens our educational environment, creates long-term value, and supports sustainable development within our school community.
Our vision is to provide a holistic education of a high standard in both German and English for all children of our society, in a Christian context, regardless of background, culture and religion, which will prepare them for a globalised world.
