Every January, Deutsche Schule Durban joyfully celebrates the first day of “big school” with a cherished German tradition: the arrival of the Grade 1 children carrying their Zuckertüte.
A Zuckertüte is a large, beautifully decorated cardboard cone filled with sweets, toys, and essential school supplies—meant to “sweeten” the first day and help the children feel excited and prepared for their new adventure.
The whole school comes together to welcome the new Grade 1 learners with special songs and dances. Each little pupil is introduced to their Grade 7 buddy, who will support them throughout the year.
After this warm welcome, the Grade 1s return to their classrooms to open their Zuckertüte and begin their exciting school journey. Parents are invited to share in this special moment over morning coffee before leaving their children to enjoy the rest of their day.
It’s a heartfelt tradition that marks the beginning of a lifelong love of learning and belonging at DSD.
