Every June, Deutsche Schule Durban celebrates Laternenfest—a beautiful tradition that calls us all to spread light and warmth.
Inspired by the European Martinstag, which honours the kind Roman soldier St Martin, our secular Laternenfest is held on a Friday evening in late May or early June on the school’s sports field.
Parents and guests are invited to bring blankets, deck chairs, and picnics to enjoy a cozy evening together around bonfires. The highlight is the lantern procession, where children proudly walk the field carrying the lanterns they made at school, accompanied by joyful singing of traditional lantern songs.
Laternenfest is a magical night of community, light, and togetherness at DSD.
